In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the product of this dissection — the element as the "indivisible atom" — was itself dissected into its elementary particles. With this step, the qualitative character of the chemical elements lost its relevance for cognizing the essential nature of substances. In taking this step, one crossed a threshold from nature into "sub-nature" and entered the subatomic domain of elementary particles — of quanta. In this domain the sense-world dissolves and another world takes its place: that of measurable energetic effects.
