In answering questions following a lecture at the Technical College of Stuttgart on 17 June 1920, Rudolf Steiner says: «Deshalb ist dasjenige, was Geisteswissenschaft im Grunde genommen sein will, nichts anderes als Phänomenologie; aber Phänomenologie, welche nicht dabei stehen bleibt, die einzelnen Phänomene zu betrachten, sondern zu lesen im Zusammenhang der Phänomene. […] Aber man versteht dann auch, wenn jemand so die Phänomenologie auffasst wie Goethe – und Geisteswissenschaft ist nur fortgeschrittener Goetheanismus.» (For this reason, what spiritual science at bottom wants to be is nothing other than phenomenology — but phenomenology that does not stop at contemplating individual phenomena, but reads in the context of phenomena.
