The preparations are substance compositions which, each in its own way, "fertilise" the relational nexus described under point 3 — the nexus between supra-nature (cosmos) and nature (earth). Here the threefoldness of the yarrow, chamomile, and stinging nettle preparations carries a particular significance. They bring about a particular kind of substance transformation: the earth-bound elements potassium and calcium are not merely etherised within the living context of the plants — they acquire properties that bring them close to the mode of working of nitrogen. They become bearers of astral forces, or ultimately transform themselves entirely into nitrogen. Rudolf Steiner gives the following indications on this: "because in the organic process there lies a secret alchemy which, when potash works within it in the right way, truly transforms the potash into nitrogen, and even transforms the lime — when that works in the right way — truly into nitrogen."[1] And further: there "exists a mutual quality-relationship between lime and hydrogen that is analogous to the quality-relationship between oxygen and nitrogen in the air. […] Under the influence of hydrogen, lime and potash are continually transformed into something nitrogen-like, and ultimately into actual nitrogen. […] That is just enormously useful for plant growth, but one must have it produced through such methods as I have described"[2] — that is to say, through an artistic shaping of substantive becoming-processes within the organism of the agricultural operation. As canvas, colour, and brush are the means of the painter's artistic creating, so for the farmer it is the earth and its enlivening through the making and application of the preparations.
