With the conventional concepts of scientific theory, such a migration of substance is unthinkable. It becomes more comprehensible when one learns to understand the soil itself — the diaphragm organ of the «farm individuality» — as a living context permeated by astral forces, into which the root immerses itself as a sense organ of a kind. One can wholly deaden this still weakly developed sense organ through nitrogen salts (cf. the chapter «Die Anwendung von Stickstoffsalzen», p. 275 ff.); one can also educate this sense organ to ever higher activity through the combined working of all the preparations named. And that is what it is about. Each one of them contributes an aspect of its working to the development of sense organization and thereby to «sensitivity» with regard to substances and forces: «Bearbeitet man den Erdboden so […], dann wird die Pflanze bereit, im weiten Umkreis die Dinge heranzuziehen.» («When the earth-soil is worked in this way […], then the plant becomes ready to draw things toward itself from a wide periphery.»)
