inward working that does not arise from an inner, soul-nature of its own — the plant has no such thing — but rather one that has the power, from out of the supersensible and through the substance-arrangement of the plant, to draw earthly substances toward itself in a directed way. But how do these substances come into movement? Must they not first be set in flow in the right way through the life-organisation of the plants growing on neighboring fields, in meadow and in forest? That is to say: must the earthly substances not first be raised out of their physical-material condition into that of the formative forces? This riddle-question remains!
