A tremendous step of emancipation took place from the modern era onward in the development of the consciousness soul striving toward individuation, and as a hallmark of the same, through the emergence of the natural sciences. These emancipate themselves from religion and from the sacred art still closely bound to it. The originally all-one differentiates into the threefoldness of religion, art, and finally science. The scientific path of cognition assumed leadership; art and religion found no place within it any longer. They became the cultural accessories. In agriculture this process advanced very slowly and at last precipitously. In doing so, the sources of moral action dried up within it. The concepts that science imports into agriculture from outside, in the form of technologies, are concepts of the makeble; they are abstract, cold, dead — and the traces they leave behind are a devastated, gutted earth abandoned to ugliness. As the traditions fade away, people will «mit Wissenschaft die Äcker düngen» (fertilize their fields with science).
