Thus the village organism—or, in the case of scattered farmsteads, the parish—exhibits an inside and an outside. The experience of this polarity shaped the daily work in the stable and in the field. In complete devotion of the mind soul, work formed a bridge between this inside and outside. It was the same hands that artfully hewed the stone for the church building, that painted the frescoes, that created the stained-glass windows, as those that outside cared for the livestock, tilled the fields, and just as artfully shaped cultural landscapes. It was the same consciousness that grasped the church building as the centre and the village bounds as the periphery and united both poles through work, through 'ora et labora', into the whole of the village organism. What the individual soul, what the entire community of the village experienced as a sacred act at the altar, flowed into the work and gave it spiritual impulse-power and the meaning to arrange the web of relationships between arable farming, animal husbandry, garden, fruit, and forest cultivation, as well as meadow and pasture husbandry, in measure, harmony, and beauty.
