The Gothic cathedrals, domes, minsters, and village churches, as well as the preceding Romanesque structures, do not close off a landscape space like the Greek temple; rather, they are in a higher sense the central organ of a total organism that includes the surrounding earthly nature. This can become truly eye-catching when one approaches such buildings as, for example, Chartres, the Strasbourg or Ulm Minster—imagining away the present-day urban surroundings—or any little village church from a distance.
