The concept of the organism is fulfilled when one attempts to conceive of the interaction of the three constituent members—physical body, life or etheric body, and soul or astral body—as a whole. What supersensible cognition first discloses to thinking as reality, the observation of the animal can teach. Only with the endowment of an astral body—that is, of a soul element permeating the earthly substance, as is the case in all animality—do an outside and an inside arise: «In the astral body, the animal shaping arises outwardly as a whole form and inwardly as the shaping of the organs […] If this shaping is carried through to its end, then the animal element is formed.»
