Rudolf Steiner draws attention to the fact of the cosmic origin of the formative, crystal-forming forces in the indications cited above. He describes their working as a winter-happening, as one that brings the earth, down into its depths, into a crystallically purer state. It is natural to see a connection between this working of formative forces and the transformation of primary into secondary clay minerals — and above all their new formation out of formless states of the soil colloids. Pointing in the same direction is the indication of Willi Laatsch (1905–1997)[1] that the crystal lattices of clay minerals in the soil at low temperatures
