Cover crop cultivation must inevitably be handled with flexibility within the crop rotation. Owing to weather conditions, the intervals between crops are extraordinarily variable. To hold to the rule — one sowing day in July is worth as much for the development of the cover crop legumes as a whole week in August — is often a matter of luck. Wet periods delay the sowing; dry spells delay germination. If the cover crop succeeds, the soil comes alive and the livestock in the stall appreciate the fresh fodder supply; if it fails, the beneficial preceding-crop effect is lost.
