Atoms have been seen as space-filling bodies — as matter, taken to be the sole cause of all higher existence on earth. This view gave the worldview of materialism a rational, apparently unshakeable foundation. Matter, so runs the claim, is the continuum that was at the beginning and will be at the end. All existence that has arisen and still has its being between this beginning — the Big Bang — and this end — *final entropy*, heat death — derives from this material ground of origin; and so too the human being, who as a material object thinks all of this. In denial of himself as a soul-sensing, spirit-striving, will-bearing being of love, he has raised this theorem to an axiom. On the strength of its apparently secure foundation — the decipherment of the mystery of substance and the technology that has issued from it — materialism is the least reflected worldview of all. It veils the view of the human being who, deploying the highest force of the intellect, constructs for himself a world in which, as a non-I, he loses himself in a void.
