Together these two form, as a synthesis, the middle of the polar working of the forces of earth and cosmos. The all-surpassing significance of the manuring of the soil comes fully into its own here. It determines, in progressive development, how the cultivated plants articulate themselves vertically and horizontally — with root, stem, leaf, blossom and fruit — into this trinity of the heights and the depths and of the middle that is coming into being. The plants are seized by an organizing force through which they open themselves to the conditions of growth of their environment.
